SIMPLE HOMEMADE HOLIDAY GIFT IDEAS

Ahhhh!!! It's the special time of the year once again, and for most of us it is the time we want to make the ones we love and care about happy without breaking the bank, so I wanted to share some great ideas on making homemade presents...because who doesn't like a present with some thought and effort put into it?

1. Homemade Cookies & Jar

Make your favorite batch of cookies from your best recipe. Find some decorations or a simple ribbon to tie around a jar or container to give it a creative holiday look!

2. Infused Vodka

Take a liter of vodka and get your favorite flavorings such as pineapple chunks, vanilla beans, limes, or even jalapenos! Get a glass bottle with a seal and place the vodka inside with your choice of flavoring (i.e. limes, lemons, etc.). Then refrigerate vodka for at least 3 days to a week so vodka can reach desired level of infusion. Keep the bottle simple or give it some holiday decoration! This is one gift that cannot go wrong!

3. Customized Coupon Book

Depending on what your recipient enjoys you can customize the book to their liking. Service ideas are great to include inside of coupon books (i.e. breakfast in bed, a day of help, or a night off) along with store related products that you know your recipient with benefit from as well. Break or chop chocolate into pieces and melt in microwave then stir in nuts, pour mixture out on a lightly buttered cookie sheet and spread to desired thickness with a spatula. Let cool to become solid then break into desired chunks. Try not to eat this great gift before giving it to your recipient!

5. Scrapbook or Scrapbook Calendar

Control Your Temperature This Summer!

This is the perfect tool for all the outside barbequing that we all will be doing this summer! I know from my own personal experiences when I am grilling, it is extremely hard to get the meat to your ideal liking. Luckily, I have not had to deal with this problem any longer because of the Spatula Meat Thermometer. This is honestly the most amazing thing I have ever discovered! There are two selectors that it works by, one that allows you to choose the exact way you would like to cook your meat for example, well done, medium rare, etc. The other selector on the spatula is to choose which type of meat you are cooking, like chicken, beef, turkey, lamb, pork. This is something I couldn’t live without this summer, and from now on I don’t think anyone should be without this fantastic thermometer! Kathleen in Elgin, Illonois writes: "My family loves when I make Betty Crocker cupcakes, I stick to the box mix, but always decorate them in the colors of the playing teams! I use food coloring, sprinkles, football candies...whatever I can find. Always a huge hit!"

Sarah in Buffalo, New York says for any party she throws, chicken fingers are a must! She sent us this delicious-sounding recipe from recipes.com:

Ingredients
1 cup crushed corn flakes
1 tablespoon finely snipped parsley
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 pound skinless, boneless chicken breasts
1/3 cup bottled blue cheese salad dressing
2 teaspoons water
1 to 2 teaspoons bottled hot pepper sauce
Celery sticks
Bottled blue cheese salad dressing

Directions
1. Combine crushed corn flakes, parsley, and salt in a shallow bowl or pie plate. Cut chicken breasts into strips about 3/4 inch wide and 3 inches long. Combine the 1/3 cup dressing, water, and hot pepper sauce in a large mixing bowl. Add chicken; stir to coat. Roll chicken pieces individually in crumb mixture to coat. Place strips on a foil-lined baking sheet. Freeze until firm, about 2 hours.
2. To serve, heat oven to 425 degree F. Place frozen chicken strips in a single layer in a lightly greased 15x10x1-inch baking pan. Bake for 18 to 20 minutes or until meat is no longer pink in center and crumbs are golden. Serve warm with celery sticks and additional blue cheese dressing for dipping. Makes 12 servings.
Make-Ahead Tip
Place frozen strips in a freezer container. Cover and freeze up to 1 month>

Louise in Houston, TX shared her favorite, easy-to-make Guacamole: "I don't follow any specific recipe, but you don't really need to because it's so easy. I usually use 2 ripe avocados, 1 large tomato, 1/2 an onion, dash of salt, dash of pepper & lime juice. Chop the tomato & onion into small pieces, mixing them together in a serving bowl. Then pit the avocados and add them, and mash them until the guacamole is as smooth or chunky as you want it. Add a little salt and pepper to season, and some lime juice to keep it fresher longer. Make it when you are ready to serve immediately after & don't forget the tortilla chips!"

And last, but not least, my favorite!! I got this off of the Frank's Red Hot website, and make it for every gathering I go to...it's a huge hit!

INGREDIENTS:

8 oz. pkg. cream cheese, softened

1/2 cup blue cheese or ranch salad dressing

1/2 cup any flavor FRANK'S® REDHOT® Sauce

1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese or shredded mozzarella cheese

2 cans (12.5 oz. each) SWANSON® White Premium Chunk Chicken Breast in Water, drained

DIRECTIONS:

HEAT oven to 350°F. Place cream cheese into deep baking dish. Stir until smooth.

MIX in salad dressing, Frank's RedHot Sauce and cheese. Stir in chicken.

BAKE 20 min. or until mixture is heated through; stir. Garnish as desired. Serve with crackers or vegetables.

TIPS:
Microwave Directions: Prepare as above. Place in microwave-safe dish. Microwave, uncovered, on HIGH 5 min. until hot, stirring halfway through cooking.

Tips: You may substitute 2 cups shredded cooked chicken.

Slow Cooker Method: Combine ingredients as directed above. Place mixture into small slow cooker. Cover pot. Heat on HIGH setting for 1 1/2 hours until hot and bubbly or on LOW setting for 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Stir.

Tailgating Tip: Prepare dip ahead and place in heavy disposable foil pan. Place pan on grill and heat dip until hot and bubbly.

Why I Love Blazers for Fall

One word: Layering. Blazers are perfect for this and are a great, fashionable alternative to a cardigan. Plus, they’re very in right now!

Blazers come in all shapes and sizes, and the key is to find one that flatters your figure. I own a single black blazer; it’s cropped above the hips and has ¾ sleeves and a slight military-like styling. It is unarguably the most versatile piece of clothing I have ever purchased. I can wear it to work for a professional look, to a BBQ for an extra layer over just about anything, at a nice dinner or out on the town for a casual chic look. There are very few items in my closet that it doesn’t work perfectly with and its’ timeless look will never go out of style.

With summer coming to a close and autumn not far off, now is the perfect time to purchase a great blazer. As temperatures drop, it’s the perfect layering piece for any outfit to add just the right amount of warmth and style!

1 – A great pair of boots! Spend a little, or a lot…but make sure they’re as versatile as possible. You want a pair that can be worn with anything…jeans, leggings, stockings… Riding boots are a classic, but there are plenty of on-trend styles to pick from. Just make sure they’re comfortable and most importantly, cute!

2 – Handbag. As women, we find any excuse for a new handbag (or ten), and a change of season is the ultimate incentive. I like medium to large-sized bags, big enough to throw a cardigan in if I’m wearing layers as temperatures fluctuate. Look for dark, neutral or metallic colors for Fall.

3 – Scarf. I LOVE scarves. And so do my co-workers at BCO. If we pooled our collection of scarves together…we’d probably have enough to wear nothing but T-shirts for the rest of our lives and still look fashionable! OK, maybe that’s a bit exaggerated, but here’s my point: Let’s say you’re wearing a white T-shirt (or something plain) for whatever reason (i.e. comfort or nothing else is clean) and you’re thinking it needs a little “something.” By throwing on a scarf or a shawl over your top, you get an instant style boost AND as the weather gets cooler, you stay warm! It’s a win-win. ☺

4 – Statement Earrings. Bold earrings are eye-catching and if you pick the right pair, add elegance to any look. They give an instant upgrade to any outfit. A little bit of sparkle goes a long way, but a lot of sparkle goes even further!

5 – Leather Jacket. Choose one in whatever style suits you and go with it! A staple in any wardrobe, leather jackets are worth the investment and can accent any style. Wear it with jeans to give off a biker attitude; or with a dress to add just a touch of edginess.

Putting Your Essentials to Work

While searching for something to wear to work the other day, it occurred to me that I tend to wear the same items over and over. I think of it as a bad habit, but in reality the pieces that I keep grabbing are office staples. There are just some things that are classic and they never go out of style. Office fashions do not change drastically from year to year, so a few key pieces of apparel are all you really need to work with. To add a little variety, I mix things up by mixing and matching patterns and adding accessories. While you’re deciding on office appropriate clothing, invest in the key pieces listed below and you’ll be set until they fall apart!

Trousers: These have been in style since the beginning of time (or at least it feels like it!) and will likely be fashionable for many more years to come. Don’t be afraid to invest in trouser pants since few good pairs will last you a long time. Keep in mind that you may need these in different lengths. I make sure that I have at least one pair that works well with heels and one that works with flats.

Dark Denim: My favorite day of the week is the one where I can wear jeans to work…Friday! For those of you who get the luxury of “casual Friday,” take advantage of it! For those of you who don’t, these types of “dressy” denim pants can be worn when going out for a nice dinner with a great looking blouse, or worn out for a drink with friends. Stick to the dark colored denim, keep the whiskered and distressed denim at home!

Blazer: A structured blazer is an essential piece to have in any work wardrobe. You can wear it over a blouse with a pair of trousers or dress it down for casual Fridays over a printed tee and a pair of your dark denim. The blazer also looks great open with a long flowing necklace with a simple top underneath it. Layers are great!

Skirt: A simple black skirt is a piece I always gravitate towards…and that’s okay! Find your most flattering silhouette and stick with it, mine is the A-line shaped skirt, but don’t forget about the pencil skirt silhouette too!

Shirt: Mix and match a crisp white shirt with your trousers, dark denim, or skirt…three days of outfits set! Keep changing the look by adding a great pair of earrings or bangle bracelets!

Dress: Find that one work-perfect dress and keep it. Mine is a brown colored v-neck wrap dress. I love it and wear it to work all the time but change the look by adding different necklaces and even changing the color of the camisole I wear underneath it. After stating those New Years resolutions one month ago,
are you still going strong?…or have you even started?

Everyone knows it’s easier to make New Years resolutions than it is to keep them. So here are some tips on keeping some commonly stated resolutions…

“My New Years resolution is to …”

…Lose Weight.” If you haven’t started on this one, it is not too late! Don’t give up just yet. One way many people get stuck on starting this resolution is they set their goals too high. Make a realistic goal. Instead of saying, “I want to lose 25 pounds by April,” try saying, “I want to lose 10-15 pounds”. If you lose more, then more power to you! It is definitely hard to completely change your schedule after the New Year and to hit the gym everyday. Instead, try walking for 10 minutes a day, around the neighborhood or on a treadmill. It will make you feel better about yourself and it is excellent for your health. It’s an easier transition into the New Year and will save you on gym memberships that may waste away a few months down the road.

While looking online for last-minute gift ideas, I keep running into the same problem over and over again. Why is it that most articles on last-minute gifts suggest items at over-the-top prices? Sure, some people can afford these, but the average person cannot. It got me thinking about some more realistic ideas for gifts that are easy to get and won’t break your budget. Here are my suggestions:

• Movie passes & a Gift Certificate for dinner. This can run you about $75, but is perfect for a couple and covers two people in one shot. If they have kids, offer to babysit for free and they will be eternally grateful. The gift of a night out and of your own time is one that will be remembered.
• Magazine subscriptions. These are great b/c if you’re really in a crunch, you can fake it. Write it in the card that they can expect the subscription in the mail (since they take a while to arrive anyway) and when you get home, fill out the form to order the subscription. Just make sure it’s a magazine that they will be interested in!
• Books, books, books. This is a classic gift and can be personalized for just about anyone. For the chef, buy a cookbook and pick out your favorite recipe, then head over to the grocery store and grab the ingredients needed to make it. For the person who doesn’t read, give them a quirky coffee table book. For someone who loves to read, pick a book based on their interests and pair it with a bookmark and a mini lamp for reading in the dark (all of which you can find at a typical bookstore and doesn’t need to cost more than $30).
• Gourmet chocolates, coffee or tea, or wine makes a great last-minute gift. You can pick things like this up at most convenience and grocery stores. Present the gift in a nice bag or basket and it will look like you put all kinds of thought into it!
• Give the gift of fashion…at little cost. During the winter and holiday season especially, scarves and matching accessories are always useful…and stylish. They don’t cost a lot either!

My number one rule of thumb when it comes to last-minute gifts is to always go with a theme. For example, if you buy a movie for a friend (or a subscription to a movie rental service), pair it with candy and popcorn for a “movie theater-at-home” theme. It doesn’t matter what the theme is, but it makes others think that a lot of thought went into the gift!

Can’t Leave the House Without

Everyone has something they can’t be without. A friend of mine always has to have on a belt, another can’t leave without her lipgloss, and yet another can’t go anywhere without her black berry (I’ve considered having it surgically removed from her hand.)

For me, I have to be in layers. Growing up in Wisconsin and living in New York now, the weather is fairly unpredictable. If I have on layers, then I am prepared for any type of whether. If it’s cold.. I’ll be warm; if it’s hot, then I take off a layer; and if it rains (I ALWAYS forget my umbrella) I take off the top layer and run to the train holding it over my head.

Comfort, Shoes, and Survival

When you think about it, the shoe is basically the finest invention since our ancestors discovered how to kill animals with pointy rocks and stick ‘em in a fire, thus creating the shish kebab. Suddenly, with the foot wrapped in the cushiony outer skin of the ex-filet, humans had the ability to move faster, with greater ease, and undoubtedly with much greater style then ever before (though it is debatable if “style” is what is most desirable when escaping from a hungry two-ton Siamese kitty).

Individuals can argue if today’s urban and suburban “jungles” are any less dangerous or menacing than our original African and Eurasian homes, but it remains that, at the end of the day, what still protects us most effectively are decent personal defenses, good food, and effective footwear. While our living standards today have changed—we tend towards padlocks and cutting remarks, cheeseburgers with a Brooklyn Lager, and your ubiquitous dress shoes and exercise wear, the point remains the same—our basic needs haven’t changed. Not really. And why settle for second-best?

So take care of yourself. Still act as though these are life-and-death decisions---buy a decent security system (or a fierce animal companion) augment your body with that better cut of meat, and don’t be cheap when taking care of your feet, whether you work in a cubicle or as a lumberjack. In today’s society, we have a rather complacent tendency to imagine that we can buy relatively anything that we’ll need, compensating for any injuries that may happen. But as our ancestors would reassure us, make the initial investment to protect yourself; don’t wait for a later time. Initial quality obviously paid off for our primogenitors (I can imagine my hairy ancestors laughing at that large, angry kitty after an escape), so it’ll pay off for you—though in this case, we’re talking simply as making a statement as a comfortable, fit, well-heeled gent---and with luck, the only animals you’ll really have to worry about is that annoying neighbor’s runt of a dog.

The Price of a Bargain

Have you ever noticed that in magazines or on fashion websites there are typically price point categories that items are put in, and are worded something like: $Bargain$, $$Budget-Friendly$$ and $$$Bank Buster$$$

I usually get excited about the first two categories, trying to pay off my school loans and living in a NYC apartment puts me on a fairly tight spending budget. However, being the shop-a-holic I am I still try to get my fix every once in a while. Today, while looking at the new have-to-have them shoes, the $Bargain$ category got my attention.

I quickly clicked on the adorable black flats (perfect for walking around the city) only to find that their $Bargain$ price was $225! Dismayed (and thinking they put the shoes in the wrong category) I clicked on the next pair of $Bargain$ shoes, and they were a whopping $175! I went on through out the list and the “cheapest” pair of shoes I could find were $85 (I’m sure by their terms was a REALLY BIG bargain).

Sadly, I don’t think those $Bargain$ prices fall into my budget. I am always surprised when I read magazines, or visit these sites to find how steep their prices are. Then I wonder, what type of salary they expect that their readership makes in order to pay for these $Bargains$ It is nice to run across actually discount and bargain sites and find a great pair of (fill in the blank) for a price that actually still allows me to pay rent, and buy groceries.

From summer to fall; These Styles Take You Where You Want To Go

Many of summer’s trends are finding their way into fall in heavier fabrics and darker colors. Florals are still in full bloom with deeper colors and unorthodox shapes. Country chic stays cool with plaid shirts and lots of tweed and corduroy. Vintage takes over accessories with berets, fedoras, and headbands.

Here are some other trends to keep an eye out for:

Dresses; bright and playful dresses are on the menu for fall. Keep your little black dress but mix it up with a colorful bag. Asymmetric shapes, interesting patterns and lots of details will be the trend for fall. When looking for colors, be sure to stay away from pastel for fall, this season is all about deep jewel tones.

Tops are feminine and flirty with lots of ruffles, bows, volume, and pleats. Chiffon and paisley prints will look great with those black pants at home. Look for pale shades and wear them tucked in, belted or layered.

Skirts; like the dress, look for bright and playful. Don’t be afraid of the full and circle skirts of this season. If you are going full on the bottom be sure to go fitted on top. Accessorize with belts and layered necklaces. This trend looks great with a cardigan or peep-toed heels.

Menswear will be in full swing this fall. Look for this trend in pants specifically. The cut of the season is high-waisted wider with legs. Look for pinstripes and plaids or fun details like extra zippers or buttons. Wear with eye catching heels and a tucked in blouse for a polished and sophisticated look.

Dressing For A Relationship?

We've all seen it happen, the happy couple - been together for years (or in some case just a few months) and all of the sudden it's all sweatpants and dirty T's. What is it about getting comfortable with someone that makes us totally lose our sense of style, not to mention our sense of self, sense of individuality, sense of normalcy...

I am what most would call a serial monogamist, and have currently been in a 2 1/2 year great relationship, but I find on weekends I tend to immediately go to my workout pants and T-shirt. After dressing up for work all week (I do work in a fashion environment here) sometimes I just don't have the energy to spend an hour getting ready on Saturday and Sunday. However, how does that make my honey feel? Knowing that I spend all this time getting dressed for work, but don't feel like I should take the same amount of care and effort at home?

So, here's what I decided to do. Instead of immediately stripping off my work clothes when I get home for the preferable "lounge-wear" I have decided to leave it on, so that I'm not all "bum" at home. I've been trying to spend at least 1 of the 2 weekend days getting myself presentable, even if it's just for a stroll around central park... and can I say it made quite a difference! Spiced up the love life, and the intimacy, and believe it or not has helped improve our relationship. It seems when you show you care (even just in trying to look nice for each other) it speaks volumes about how you feel....

1. Don't Mix Gold and Silver

Mix and match your jewelry as much as you mix and match your clothes. Rose gold, white gold, yellow gold can all be worn together and mix and matched to go with your outfit. Try a gold metallic top with a silver belt, or a silver bag with gold accessories, and the outfit opportunities are endless.

2. Plus Size Women Shouldn’t Wear Stripes.

- Any women of any size should wear whatever you like, as long as you are comfortable. There are plenty of stripes that look great on all women, just be sure that they are not pulling and stretching, and wear your stripes proud!

3. No Brown with Black or Black with Navy.

- These color combinations can look very sophisticated or stylish as long as it’s well balanced. A brown belt with a black outfit for example can look stunning, or navy pants with a black top. Mix and match these color combinations for tons of new looks that were not “allowed” before.

4. No white after Labor Day.

- Be sure it’s weather appropriate (no open toed shoes in winter) and white is great for any season.

5. Never wear denim with denim.

- While I’m not recommending pulling a Justin & Britney with matchy-matchy denim, you can wear denim together if you look for different washes and colors. We are no longer stuck with just blue denim. A light washed denim blazer with white or colorful jeans make a great denim combo.

6. Avoid clashing colors

- An unexpected color combination can make a great statement. Hot pink and red, or sea foam green and red can be a stunning combination.

7. Long dresses aren't for short women.

- Just make sure that the pattern is proportionate to your size, for smaller women choose a smaller print. Also, look for a more fitted style so as not to overwhelm your frame.

8. Showing skin isn't sophisticated.

- On the contrary, if it’s unexpected or unique. For example, look for cut-out sides, or a sheer lacy back. Most importantly make sure your confidence shows!

9. Save the sequins for after dark.

- Sequins can be worn anytime, as long as it isn’t sequin overload. Keep it to one piece at a time, and mix with solid basics to down play the typically night time look.

10. No Minis on Women over 35

- Ladies if you’ve got it, flaunt it! However, flaunt tastefully. We don’t want to see cut off jean skirts with Uggs on a 40 year old women, instead look an overall flattering look, and if you are going to show more leg, cover up a little more on top, let’s leave some mystery there.

The Perfect Handbag

The perfect handbag is as elusive as the perfect partner. You try them on, take them out, see how your friends feel about them, and then take them home. You want to break them in, but you know that they aren’t going to change too much from the initial meeting. You want to be able to take them anywhere; out to dinner, to the movies, or to a fancy dinner, and know that they will fit in. When you’ve finally found that perfect handbag, or date for that matter, you never want to let them go, and can’t even imagine a replacement!

I am still on the hunt for the perfect bag, but I can envision it in my head. I have the entire wish list, yes, the same kind I had for “the perfect man” once upon a time.

Here are my requirements (for the bag, not the man):

1) Black with silver hardware, preferably leather

2) Medium size- not too big or too small, so that it is ready for any occasion

3) Lots of pockets so that I can stay organized and don’t become one of those “bag ladies” who is constantly digging for her keys, phone, makeup, or whatever.

4) Adjustable shoulder strap so it can be worn on one shoulder, or across the chest

5) Matches anything

Just as I quest for this infamous bag, it seems I also have my social goals to match.

1) A government who cares for its people more than it cares about power and money

2) A country that is more concerned with community that TV

3) Health and wellness for all, regardless of social status or circumstance

4) A minimum wage above the poverty line

5) Affordable housing, so that good and hardworking families are not living on the street

It seems at times that the search for the perfect fashion statement seems trivial when we have all these other concerns on our plate. However, one thing this ongoing quest has taught me is this, no matter how “dreamy” our wish list may seem at times we can never stop looking. When we stop looking for the perfect bag, man, or government then we will lose all hope of ever finding it. Perhaps when I do find that perfect bag it will just be more confirmation that my other goals can also be achieved. We just need to roll up our sleeves, tighten our belts, and continue searching for those things that we deem “perfect.”

Their timeless elegance is something that women across the globe have been trying to recreate for decades. Here are a few tips from those screen sirens to make our everyday a bit more glamorous.

1) Never look overly done up. Hair was looser and wavier, makeup was fierce but natural, and the old rule was always take off one thing before you leave the house. It’s never good to have your makeup, hair, and accessories fighting for attention. Sometimes simpler is more glamorous.

2) Show off your curves without showing too much skin. Nowadays it seems like less is more on the red carpet, with skirts up to there, and tops cut down to there, it’s amazing that there is any fabric in between. However, one thing that earlier movie stars knew was, there is more sexiness in mystery, that in nudity; especially in public. So, if you are going to wear something that is more revealing on top, stay covered up on the bottom, and visa versa. If it’s skin tight, then don’t show too much cleavage or leg, and it will all balance out for a sexy and gorgeous look.

3) Look for Hollywood classics, like cardigans, a string of pearls, or an amazing A-line skirt, then modernize it and make it your own.

4) Don’t be afraid of a little cat eye liner, as long as you aren’t wearing red lipstick at the same time.

5) Exude tons of red-carpet confidence. Nothing made those women sexier than the confidence to be themselves, and have their own style.

There have been many theories on every person having a “word.” This word is something that the person, consciously or subconsciously, lives by, works by, and uses to address a huge portion of their every day issues. These words have also been used for: cities, states, and even countries. Your word could be anything from “love” to “work.” I’ve been thinking about what my word is and I came up with some that I wanted to be my word, some were wishful thinking, some described a part of me, and a few that would have been pretty successful in describing a larger part of me. Some of those words were; "fashion forward," “loyal,” “grateful,” “beautiful,” “intelligent,” “clumsy,” etc. After much thought I was able to narrow it down to one word: seeker.

I pick that word because while I would have liked: “love,” “truth,” “successful,” or some other gratifying word, I believe that “seeker” is the best all-encompassing word that I could have used. I spend my time seeking answers, seeking truth, seeking love, seeking success, etc. I don’t typically settle until I’ve “sought” out what I am looking for.

When you decide what your word is, I think it helps to clarify quite a bit about our lives; we are able to see the picture a little bit more whole.

I have been trying to be more eco-conscious lately. Some of the best tips that I have heard for the work place lately are:

- Have your own water bottle and coffee mug at work, you’ll save thousands of pounds in paper waste by not using disposable cups

- Keep scrap paper in a drawer and bring it in your portfolio to meetings so that you can use it twice.

- Try to send most things via email, or upload to a document rather than print them out

- Have your own silverware at work and wash and re-use them rather than using plastic silverware and throwing them away

I have finally come to terms with the fact that my bag has too much in it! It’s way too heavy, and by the time I get home from work my shoulder aches. I used to be a girl scout and so I have an “always be prepared” philosophy about my bag. However, I’m afraid of becoming one of those people who is always rummaging through their purses looking for their keys, wallet, money, or whatever! And so I took an inventory of what is in my bag and here is what I came up with:

I have an emergency ziplock bag containing everything from packets of aspirin to matches (I don’t smoke but you’ll never know when you might need them!).
I always keep a magazine or a book on me for the train ride
My mail, which is still un-opened, although I have every intention of going through it
My Netflix that need to be returned
My Day Planner, which hasn’t been updated since April
Pens and Pencils
My Ipod
Today’s Newspaper
My glasses, contact case and solution
My digital Camera
Makeup , etc…

I attempt to clean out my bag every week or so, but I always seem to fill it up again! I’ve tried carrying around smaller bags, but then I feel like I’m missing something.

Learning to Relax

In our to-do list frantic culture the idea of relaxing is often looked at as a guilty pleasure enjoyed by trust fund babies and celebrities. Living in New York often just increases the rush around, save the world, and be home in time to cook dinner feeling that often plagues us career women types. A friend of mine often compares New York to sticking your finger into a light socket.

I literally survive off of my To-Do list, which is obsessively updated every day. Last weekend I did something crazy; I put my list away! I spent the entire weekend relaxing, watching movies and doing NOTHING. While the first half of day was spent in a guilt induced state of panic over all the things I wasn’t getting done, by the Sunday I was actually enjoying myself.

I came in on Monday morning energized and completed my assignments in half of the time I would have normally finished them. I started thinking that maybe there is something to relaxing and re-charging your batteries. I did some research on relaxation and there are even more benefits that just getting my Monday reports done quicker. Relaxation also helps smooth out emotions, creates better sleeping habits, increases energy and immunity, helps with concentration and problem solving, and helps create a better quality of life.

Not longer is going to the spa just a “girl’s weekend splurge,” now it has actual health benefits! Perhaps it is time for us to set down our superhero capes, and take some time for us. I’ve learned to say okay to getting fewer things crossed off of my To-Do list in order to allow myself to relax more, and lower my stress. In a day and age where we are a driven and ambitious “me” obsessed culture, perhaps we should actually take more “me” time. Spending that “me” time doing nothing more than enjoying our own company.

Dangers of a Rising Hemline

I have seen an increasing number of mini skirt and mini shorts this season. Some of which I find quite shocking. Call me old fashioned but, when I can see your cheeks, and I’m not talking about the ones on your face, your skirt may be just a bit too short.

I saw a woman walking to work this morning, and she had on a beautiful top, great heels, and the shortest pair of shorts I had seen yet. Honestly, it looked like she was walking around in a pair of boy-shorts and had forgotten her pants.

I don’t mind showing a bit of skin, and summer is absolutely the time to do it, but come on! Some things are just not appropriate. My rule of thumb, if you are afraid to sneeze or bend over, and the thought of a gust of wind suddenly sweeping by terrifies you, then your skirt is just TOO SHORT.

Weight Discrimination

I think we are all too familiar with weight discrimination. According to USA Today it has become as common as racism. I have been deemed “overweight” most of my life. I wear my weight well on my 5’9” frame, but according to statistics I’m just not skinny enough. During high school I finally managed to get down to the “normal” weight for my height, and believe it or not, you could count my ribs. In order to keep that weight I forbad myself to eat, and after some loving friends discovered my problem, I got help and now am a healthy size 14. Currently I do my best to maintain a healthy lifestyle and try to exercise at least three times a week. I have come to accept and love my body. I will never be a size 8 and I stopped trying to get there.

Not everyone is meant to be skinny, and I was appalled to read the comments on the article by USA Today. It seems many people believe that if you are overweight or obese you should just stop eating until you get to a healthy weight?! Ironically, I know more people who would be considered “overweight” that are far healthier than their “skinny” counterparts.

Discrimination is discrimination regardless of how it’s labeled.

Who doesn’t want to look thinner, especially during the summer season? Here are some tips and tricks to use the Summer trends to your benefit.

If you are plus size:

Avoid

- Shiny and slinky fabrics. They have a tendency to show every lump and bump.

- Too tight clothes and dresses or skirts that fall right at the ankle, they cut the leg right at the shoe and stop that beautiful long line.

Instead:

- Choose clothes with cotton blends, or you could also choose fabrics that have a slight amount of stretch.

- Find a flattering neckline that brings all the attention to your face.

- Look for dresses with a fitted waist that skims over stomach, hips and thighs.

- Look for a neutral shoe to extend your leg line.

If you are Busty

Avoid

- Stretch Satin- You can see every definition of your bra underneath

- Shirts that pull at the bust line, which will only bring more attention to your chest and make it seem larger than it is

- Sleeveless Tops or Dresses that are tight fitting around the arms, can cause an extra bulge around the side of the breasts.

Instead

- Matte fabrics are best, the cover any bra definitions and don’t pull as much as a satin fabric

- Look for a top that is well fitted and doesn’t pull. It is always better to buy one size up and get the waist tailored if need be.

Money’s Tight; How a Shopaholic Survives the Recession

I admit it, I am a shopaholic. I love new things, I love buying things, looking online, and watching trends. However, like most people, with rising gas, food, and housing prices I have become more of a window shopper.

So, how do I still shop responsibly, while paying for bills and growing my savings account? Lately, I spend more time thinking over my purchases, buying clothing that will last longer, and go through multiple seasons, and avoiding expensive fads. For example, a pair of black pants; great staple, they last a long time, and you can wear them out or to work, layered with multiple tops for multiple outfits! I stick more to staples and accessorize more. Accessories are always less expensive than clothing items and can update any item.

However, my biggest money saver is bargain shopping; I race to bargain websites, clearance racks, and sales before I go anywhere else. If I need something I try to find it at its lowest discount, and then use a coupon! Money is tight, and I’m budgeting more than ever, but a shopaholic will always find a way!

Beat The Heat!

It isn’t even officially Summer yet, and it’s already over 90! I’ve been spending a lot more time at the beach, picnics and the park, but how do you stay cool in the sweltering heat while still enjoying the beautiful outdoors? Some tips that have helped me out are; making sure I drink lots of water and lemonade, wear light color clothing, light breezy material (cotton or linen), comfortable sandals, lots of sunscreen, and good sunglasses to protect your eyes. I also try not to keep the temperature too low at home, so that when I go outside I’m not blasted by the heat.

I can’t wait for all the events that are coming our way this summer, free outdoor concerts, beach festivals, outdoor sports, and picnics! It’s bound to be the most exciting time this year!

Don’t

- Wear drab layers and bulky clothes, they have a tendency to make anyone look bigger, and older!

- Wear black all the time, black is a great color to have in your closet, and it goes with anything, but wearing it all the time will have you more funeral-ready than office-ready!

- Forgo all “Femininity and Style” for “Comfortable & Baggy,” great style can be comfortable too!

- Dress like your kids, your grandmother, or anyone else for that matter! Be inspired by others, but take time to find out what YOU like! Before you know it everyone will be inspired by what you’re wearing!

- Wear clothes in your size that are figure flattering and fitted to your body. Nothing is more flattering than a great outfit that shows off your womanly curves!

- Be daring with color, stand out of a crowd!

- When wearing black look for sleek, un-faded pieces

- Find clothes that “lift you up” and make you feel good, laid back doesn’t mean lazy or frumpy!

- Wear age-appropriate clothing that fits your unique style!

Great Fitting Lingerie

Lingerie can be every woman’s friend or her worst nightmare. Ideally what’s underneath will make you feel beautiful, sexy, and be invisible under you clothing. Here are some great tips for getting the most out of your intimates.

Update your bras every year, as they can become misshapen, and we have a tendency to change sizes in less than a year.

Make sure you size is correct, get re-fitted every year.

Make sure the band of your bra stays in the middle of your back, if it is riding up you need a new size, and it will make you droop.

When looking for strapless bras look for these things:

- Buy 1 cup size bigger, and 1 band size smaller. This will give you a better fit and more support

- Look for a wide band which will also be more supportive

- Go for support and shape over frills and decorations. It may look pretty, but it isn’t guaranteed to last through the night!

Don’t throw a molded cup bra in the dryer. It will misshape it.

Hand washing bras are best, as they will last longer. If you must wash it, be sure to get an intimates bag for your washer to protect the hooks and the shape of the bra.

When looking for a lace bra, look for a cross seam to keep the cup intact

If you are a larger cup size, look for nylon/lycra blends rather than cotton/lycra blends. They will last longer and retain their shape.

If you have one breast that is larger than the other (1 in 4 women do) be sure to fit the larger breast.

When looking for panties, make sure they are comfortable, not too tight around the waist or thighs. Also be sure to try them on with dress pants to make sure you don’t have any visible panty lines.

Whatever you are buying, be sure that it’s something you are comfortable in and that it makes you feel beautiful and sexy!

I don’t know how many of you watch America’s Next Top Model, and I fade in and out of the show. I had missed the season finale and one of my friends ran up to me yesterday to tell me that Whitney, the plus size model on the show, had won! I immediately went to their blog to see all the details about her win. I looked through her portfolios, and the pictures of her are breathtaking. I am so happy to see a REAL plus size model win a show! It’s about time that full figured women are recognized for how beautiful we really are.

The Swimsuit Season!

I think many Women fear the swimsuit season. I know I did for a long time. I never wanted to go without a cover up and a pair of shorts. Last year I did something for the first time, I wore my swimsuit without a cover-up! It was very refreshing to run around the beach in a Plus Size Bikini and not worry about what other people thought. I felt comfortable, and after being on the beach for awhile I realized that there were plenty of other plus size women without cover-ups, in one and two piece swimsuits and they all looked great! Seeing other confident and beautiful women gave me confidence and I started going to the beach ever week! I had a great time and I finally conquered my swimsuit phobia.

For example: this year my Mom had recently lost quite a bit of weight, and she is running out of clothes, so I splurged and bought her a few new outfits, all mix and match pieces so that she can re-wear them in all sorts of different ways. Her favorite Mother’s day gift was a throw I bought her (with her money) when I was still in elementary school. It was her favorite color, and one of her favorite quotes. I don’t think you can go wrong, as long as the gift comes from the heart.

What type of sacrifices do you make for fashion? I think we can all sympathize with spending all of you paycheck on that new outfit... on payday type of sacrifice. I know I've done that more than once! In thinking about the different sacrifices I have made, I came up with a list:

- Blown an entire paycheck? Yes

- Skipped Lunch for a new outfit? Yes! (Too many Times!)

- High Heels above 3”? Rarely, at 5'10" tall 3” heels are my limit

- Too-Tight Jeans? Yes, which have embarrassingly ripped in public twice!

- Blister Causing Shoes? Unfortunately Yes!

- Heavy Dangling Earrings? Yes! I love huge earrings!

The maxi dress is one of the most forgiving fashion trends yet! Great on any frame, the maxi can make any woman feel elegant and beautiful. Here are a few tips on how to wear this season’s latest trend:

For Petite Women:

Look for A-line dresses, fitted on top, with minimum volume on the bottom.

If you opt for a printed version, look smaller patterns.

Look for an empire-waisted dress if your belly is a problem area.

Accessorize with high-heeled sandals, espadrilles, or wedges to add extra height

For Plus Size Women:

The maxi hides problem areas like larger hips and thighs, while allowing you to feel feminine and beautiful

Avoid elastic, stretchy or slinky materials and look for cotton, cotton blends and linen.

Look for Larger patterns and bold prints, they look better on larger frames. Avoid small paisley or floral prints they look better on petites.

If you have a larger bust; look for a halter style dress that offers a lot of support.

Look to add fun and bold accessories and a great pair of sandals to liven up the look. Also, look for a beautiful bright color to mix and match some other fashion trends of the season.

It’s a jungle out there! Florals are taking over the season and coming to a wardrobe near you! Ruling in bold colors, brash styles, and big prints these florals are a world away from the delicate ones of last season. Prints have been found on accessories, dresses, shirts, pants, and shoes! When looking for a print; try to find a pattern similar to your size structure. If you are smaller look for a smaller print, and the same rules apply for someone with a larger structure. The most important rule of all is to have fun with prints, they can be artsy, bold or elegant, just make sure it’s you!
